The new skilled list of occupations for the General skilled migration programme has now been released by the Australian government,making the announcement on 17 May 2010.

The list will take effect from 1 July 2010 and only contains 181 occupations, unlike its predecessor which had more than 400. It’s main focus is to target migrants who have the skills which are critical to Australia economic development in the medium to long term. The Australian government wants to deliver an offshore skilled visa programme that is very much focused on the skills required by the current labour market. The list includes managerial, professional, associate-professional and trade occupations. The list of occupations will be reviewed annually but it is expected that it will be relatively stable over time
